Jesse Helms was born May 4, 1918 in a rural community near Cullowhee, North Carolina. He began his political career in 1939 when he became a member of the city council in Cullowhee. In 1941 he became mayor of Cullowhee and served two two-year terms. In 1951 he was elected to the United States Senate from North Carolina, where he served four terms
In addition to his service in Congress, he was a member of the President's Commission on Civil Rights and the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey, and also served as Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on the Bicentennial and attended White House conferences on arms control and nuclear proliferation.
